Hope vs Commitment

I’ve always been a good hoper.

Hoping for good things for myself, for others, for the world.

So when I heard my coach Brooke Castillo telling to pay attention to things we hope for because it sounds pretty but might not be serving us, I got curious.

She points out that hope doesn’t inspire action. It’s passive. It doesn’t take full responsibility.

You can keep hoping to have a better job, get more clients, build your business, lose weight, etc. – and take no action.

Hoping is effortless, it doesn’t require anything of us.

Hope waits for something good to happen.

You can check how you feel when you feel hope for something you want to happen compared to being committed, certain, interested, or determined to make something happen. Those emotions provide very different fuel for actions.

I think hope is definitely better than hopelessness, especially, in situations that are outside of your control.

However, commitment is way more useful when you want to create something.

I’ve started paying more attention to hope.

Instead of hoping to be more fit, I committed to exercising regularly.

Instead of hoping to start meditating regularly, committed to 10-minute each day for 30 days, and then kept recommitting.

Also, hope sometimes shows me my indecision or simply not wanting the thing enough to put in the effort.

Like surfing. 🙂

I tried it once and I loved it!

I was hoping that one day I’ll magically turn into a surfer girl and be great at it.

However, I didn’t take another class and would find excuses as to why not do it when my friends would invite me to go surf although I felt like I should as I live in Hawaii.

When I stopped hoping for it to happen, I acknowledged that I simply didn’t want to put in the time and effort required, and there were other things I preferred to do at this stage of my life.

So that freed me from making excuses to others and lying to myself. 🙂

☑️ What are you hopeful about when it comes to your dreams and goals? Are you willing to commit to making it happen?
